New Delhi, 9th Oct: Senior BJP leader and former South Delhi MLA, Dr. Vijay Jolly, has sharply criticised the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order dated 28 May 2025 that bans private water tankers in Delhi, calling it “unjustifiable” given the city’s ongoing water supply challenges.
Dr. Jolly highlighted the widening gap between demand and supply, noting that Delhi’s daily water requirement is 1,290 million gallons per day (MGD), while Delhi Jal Board (DJB) currently supplies only 990 MGD. He emphasized that the shortfall is partially met by private water tankers, which serve both the residents and ongoing construction projects in the city.

The BJP leader also pointed out the plight of residents in Delhi’s 1,731 unauthorised colonies, home to roughly 50 lakh citizens. “DJB can meet their water needs only partially. Tanker dispatches often take three to four days,” he said, adding that this has been the ground reality for decades.
While appreciating DJB’s recent launch of 1,111 GPS-enabled water tankers, Dr. Jolly stressed that the initiative is “too little and inadequate” to bridge the supply-demand gap. He underscored that private tankers are a lifeline for the capital, ensuring water access for both affluent and economically weaker citizens, as well as supporting construction activities.
Dr. Jolly called on the Delhi government to take immediate cognizance of the NGT order and intervene to prevent disruption of essential water supply services.
