Dr Jitendra Singh Launches National Science Day 2024 Theme: ‘Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat

Union Science & Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh unveiled the theme for “National Science Day 2024” on Tuesday.

The theme, titled “Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat,” means to promote public appreciation for science, technology, and innovation, highlighting the accomplishments of Indian scientists in addressing challenges through home-grown technologies for overall well-being.

The theme signifies a strategic shift towards fostering collaboration between the public and scientific communities, both domestically and internationally, to contribute to India’s well-being and humanity as a whole. It emphasizes the importance of achieving self-reliance in India through science while addressing subjects crucial for global welfare.

National Science Day is observed annually on 28th February to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ by Sir C.V. Raman, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930. The Government of India designated this day as National Science Day in 1986. Theme-based science communication activities will be conducted across the country to mark the occasion, particularly in schools and colleges.

India has witnessed significant scientific achievements in recent years, elevating its global stature. The country ranks among the top five nations in scientific research publications globally, showing remarkable progress from 81st to 40th position in the Global Innovation Index since 2015. Moreover, India’s patent filings have surpassed 90,000, the highest in two decades.

The strengthening of India’s Science & Technology ecosystem has led to breakthroughs in various fields, including Artificial Intelligence, Astronomy, Renewable Energy, Semiconductors, Climate Research, Space Exploration, and Biotechnology. India’s scientific prowess was further demonstrated with the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon’s south pole, making it the first country to achieve this feat.

India’s robust vaccine development capacity has been recognized globally, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The nation is poised to match global advancements in Quantum Technology, with Indian scientific breakthroughs significantly enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.

Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), emphasized the transformative power of science in shaping India’s future and contributing to global progress. He highlighted the importance of fostering a collaborative ecosystem for scientific inquiry and leveraging science for the greater good.

The event witnessed the participation of Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Dr. Kalaiselvi, Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Dr. Rashmi Sharma, Head of the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), DST, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology.
