New Delhi, 22nd July: In a dramatic turn of events, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has tendered his resignation, effective immediately, citing medical advice and the need to prioritize his healthcare. This unexpected announcement comes just ten days after he publicly stated that he would complete his term and retire in August 2027, adding, however, a noteworthy disclaimer: “subject to divine intervention.”
Addressing an event at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on July 10, Shri Dhankhar had remarked, “I will retire at the right time, August 2027, subject to divine intervention.” This statement, seemingly made in a lighter vein, has now taken on a poignant significance following his shock resignation on July 21.
In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, which was also posted on X (formerly Twitter), Dhankhar explicitly stated, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.” He expressed deep gratitude to President Murmu for her “unwavering support and the soothing, wonderful working relationship” they maintained.
He further extended his thanks to the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, noting, “Prime Minister’s cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office.” Dhankhar also conveyed his appreciation for the “warmth, trust, and affection” received from all Members of Parliament, cherishing the “invaluable experiences and insights” gained as Vice President in India’s democracy.
A veteran political figure, Shri Dhankhar has served in various capacities as an MP, MLA, Union Minister, and Governor, before ascending to the second-highest constitutional office. During his nearly three-year tenure as Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, he was known for his assertive style, often engaging in lively exchanges with the Opposition and making sharp remarks concerning the separation of powers, particularly targeting the Judiciary on certain occasions.
Hailing from a farming family in Rajasthan, Dhankhar began his career as a lawyer in the high court before entering politics. After an initial stint with the Congress party, he later joined the BJP and served as a minister in the Chandra Shekhar government.
His sudden departure, after hinting at a full term, has undoubtedly surprised political circles and will lead to an expedited process for electing his successor.
