New Delhi, 25th May. Both the Biju Janata Dal and the YSRCP declared on Wednesday that they will be attending the official inauguration of the new parliament building, which is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The event has caused controversy, with many political groups announcing their decision to boycott it.

“BJD believes that these constitutional institutions should be above any issue that may affect their sanctity and honour. Such issues can always be discussed in the august house,” it said. Currently, the party has 12 MPs in the Lok Sabha and eight in the Rajya Sabha.

“The president of India is the head of the Indian State. The parliament represents 1.4 billion people of India. Both the institutions are symbols of Indian democracy and draw their authority from the constitution of India,” the letter said.

The new parliament building’s inauguration is set to take place on Sunday. Nineteen opposition parties, including the Congress and Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party, announced the boycott on Wednesday, calling the inauguration a “grave insult” and “direct assault” on democracy. They had said that president Draupadi Murmu was not going to unveil it, which was an insult to the nation.

The BJD declaration came only two weeks after Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. He then stated that he had spoken with the PM about speeding development on the Jagannath International Airport, and that the PM assured him of his full support.

Later, speaking to reporters, he reiterated his party’s policy of fighting elections on its own and denied the prospect of a third front. This move by the BJD suggests that the party is unlikely to change its strategy of remaining neutral between the BJP and the Congress, at least till the 2024 general and Assembly elections.

Meanwhile, the YSRCP has also confirmed its participation at the event.
