New Delhi, 12 th August. President Ram Nath Kovind’s term as the president of India ends in July 2022 and with it the discussion on who will be the next president has gained momentum. Now the name of Ratan Tata the iconic industrial list from Tata group is the hot topic among the political parlances. There is a demand to make Ratan Tata the next President of the country by running a campaign on the Internet. A #RatanTata4President campaign is being launched on Twitter for the same.
Tamil film industry is also demanding Ratan Tata as president, Naga babu, the biggest producer of Tamil films, has also supported the demand. Ratan Tata has done a lot for the country, he is eligible for this post. However, Ratan Tata is yet to respond.
However, it will not be easy for Ratan Tata as his detractors will pounce upon the Radia tapes controversy in which his company an several journalists from NDTV were involved during UPA government regime. The detractors of Ratan Tata said that if his name figures for the President they will surely bring the Radia tape controversy in the public domain again.
The Radia tapes controversy relates to the telephonic conversations between Nira Radia, a political lobbyist in India, and then Indian telecom minister A. Raja, and senior journalists, politicians, and corporate houses, taped by the Indian Income Tax Department in 2008–09. The tapes were leaked out to the press and were eventually published by some media outlets and shown by television channels.
The revelations in the tapes led to accusations of misconduct by many of these people and served a precursor to the 2G scam and a stronger check for the media.
Nira Radia used to run a public relations firm named ‘Vaishnavi Communications’ which was the object of CBI investigation. Ratan Tata allegedly also figured in some of the tapes and if he runs for the president these Tapes will once again surface in the public domain.
There is also a buzz among opposition parties about the next President. It is believed that the NDA as well as the UPA may announce their candidate. Sharad Pawar is at the forefront of opposition parties. Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu and Governor Arif Mohammad Khan are also in the race.
