New Delhi, 12th Feb. As preparations intensify for the farmers’ rally scheduled on February 13, Delhi Police has taken proactive measures to maintain order. Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been enforced in North-East Delhi and along the borders with neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
Additionally, Shahadara and Gandhi Nagar areas of Delhi have also been included under this provision, effectively prohibiting large gatherings until March 11.
The ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, organized by approximately 200 farmers’ unions, aims to press for various demands, including a separate law to ensure Minimum Support Price (MSP) for farm produce and the withdrawal of cases filed against them during previous demonstrations.
The police order, issued on Sunday, cites concerns about potential disruptions to law and order, necessitating the imposition of Section 144. It prohibits public gatherings at areas along the UP border within the North-East district of Delhi Police jurisdiction.
Furthermore, the order prohibits the entry of vehicles carrying protestors from Uttar Pradesh into Delhi. Strict measures have been outlined to deter individuals from bearing arms, with violators subject to legal action under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
Elaborate security arrangements are underway at the Punjab-Haryana borders in Ambala, Jind, and Fatehabad districts, with Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora visiting Tikri, Singhu, and Ghazipur borders to oversee security preparations.
Sources indicate the deployment of significant Delhi Police personnel, alongside requests for central armed forces, at these border areas to manage any potential contingencies.
The protesting farmers remain resolute in their demands, emphasizing the need for legislation guaranteeing MSP and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, among others.
