New Delhi, 2nd March: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, on Monday said that true empowerment of women would be achieved only when they are able to take independent decisions, live with self-respect and access equal opportunities and security.
She was addressing the event ‘Sashakt Nari, Samriddh Delhi’, organised by the Government of NCT Delhi in the national capital.
The President noted that women today are excelling in every field — from safeguarding the nation’s borders as soldiers to advancing research as scientists and bringing laurels in international sports competitions. She said women are making their mark in politics, administration, social service and business, and highlighted the growing number of girls receiving degrees and medals at convocations across the country.
However, she pointed out that women continue to face violence, economic inequality, social stereotypes and health-related neglect. Removing these barriers, she said, is essential to achieving the goal of women’s empowerment. An empowered woman, she added, can transform not only her own life but also the direction of society and future generations.
Highlighting the Centre’s initiatives, the President referred to schemes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, Lakhpati Didi Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana. She said these initiatives are strengthening the social, economic and political status of women across the country.
At the same time, she underlined that women’s empowerment is not solely the government’s responsibility. Society as a whole must ensure that women are educated, confident and supported in pursuing their aspirations.
Describing Delhi as a microcosm of India, the President said the capital must set an example in women-led development. If women in Delhi are safe, educated and self-reliant, it will send a powerful message across the country.
She emphasised that both government and society must create an environment where women can make independent life choices without fear or pressure, contributing fully to the vision of a prosperous Delhi and a developed India.
