Delhi Launches ‘Zero Tolerance’ Traffic Zones

Tough crackdown on violations across Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and NDMC areas to curb congestion and pollution.

New Delhi, 17th Jan: In a major move to curb traffic violations and ease congestion, the Delhi Traffic Police has rolled out ‘Zero Tolerance’ Zones across some of the capital’s busiest corridors, including the Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and areas under the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). The initiative seeks to enforce stricter lane discipline, improve crowd management and reduce pollution in high-traffic areas.

Under the plan, dedicated bus lanes will be clearly marked and strictly monitored. Officials said indiscipline by buses — particularly picking up passengers from the main carriageway — has been a key cause of traffic snarls and accidents. Any violation of designated lanes will attract immediate penalties.

Special focus is being placed on crowd and pedestrian management at major crossings. For this, 14 dedicated enforcement teams of the traffic police have been deployed on both sides of key junctions where illegal parking and encroachment are common. These teams will monitor traffic flow round-the-clock and take spot action against violators.

Areas with heavy footfall — including railway stations, metro hubs and ISBTs — have been prioritised as they routinely witness bottlenecks and safety hazards. Officials believe stricter enforcement will not only reduce violations but also help ease congestion, leading to lower vehicular emissions and better air quality.

In a recent special drive across six traffic-sensitive zones — Azadpur Mandi, Anand Vihar, Karol Bagh, Teen Murti, Dwarka–Najafgarh Road and Uttam Nagar — police issued 2,200 challans in just 24 hours. Anand Vihar alone saw 1,040 challans in a single day, along with bus impoundments, action against drunk driving and penalties for lane violations.

Traffic police officials said the crackdown will be sustained to ensure safer, smoother and more disciplined movement across the national capital.
