New Delhi, 1st July: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has written to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, urging the Centre to rename the historic Old Delhi Railway Station after Maharaja Agrasen, a revered figure known for his legacy of non-violence, peace, and social justice.
In her letter dated June 19, Gupta said renaming the station to Maharaja Agrasen Railway Station would be a “fitting tribute” to the legendary leader whose contributions continue to shape Delhi’s cultural and economic landscape. “This proposal resonates deeply with millions of Delhiites who hold Maharaja Agrasen in the highest esteem,” she wrote.
Describing him as a symbol of social harmony and economic foresight, Gupta emphasized that the move would honour his vision of inclusive growth and community welfare. “His countless followers and descendants continue to play a pivotal role in Delhi’s development,” the letter stated.
The Old Delhi Railway Station, located in the heart of Chandni Chowk, is one of the oldest and busiest stations in the country. Commissioned in 1864, its structure draws inspiration from the nearby Red Fort and is a key junction in the national railway network. It currently operates 18 platforms, including two large enough to handle two 24-coach trains end-to-end.
Gupta has requested the Railway Minister’s “personal intervention” to facilitate an early and favourable decision on the renaming proposal. If approved, the move would mark a significant symbolic gesture and could spark broader discussions on honouring regional icons through public infrastructure.
