New Delhi, 20th Aug: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked by a man at her Civil Lines office during a “Jan Sunwai” (public hearing) on Wednesday morning. The sudden incident caused a stir, prompting political reactions. The CM, who sustained injuries to her hand, shoulder, and head, released a statement on X soon after.

The attacker has been identified as 41-year-old Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakariya from Rajkot, Gujarat. Police said he had arrived at the CM’s office disguised as a complainant. A witness reported that the man, after a brief conversation with the CM, suddenly attacked her, attempting to grab and pull her to the ground.

Following the incident, a case was registered at Civil Lines police station under section 109(1) of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) for attempted murder, along with charges of obstructing a public servant. According to the police, the accused has five prior criminal cases against him.

In a post on X, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the attack was a “cowardly attempt” to break her resolve to serve the people. She stated that such incidents would not deter her and that public hearings would continue with the same seriousness and commitment.

The Chief Minister’s office has described the attack as part of a “pre-planned conspiracy to murder the Chief Minister.”
