New Delhi, 30th Dec: The Defence Ministry on Tuesday signed major procurement contracts worth ₹4,666 crore to strengthen the combat readiness of the Indian Army and the Indian Navy, marking another milestone under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

A contract valued at ₹2,770 crore was signed with Bharat Forge Limited and PLR Systems Private Limited for the supply of more than 4.25 lakh close-quarter battle carbines along with accessories for the Army and Navy. The ministry said the induction of these indigenous weapons will replace legacy systems and significantly enhance the lethality and protection of Indian soldiers.

Calling it a landmark achievement, the ministry said the procurement reflects a sustained effort to equip the armed forces with world-class, home-grown weapon systems under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

In another key contract, the ministry signed an agreement worth approximately ₹1,896 crore with WASS Submarine Systems SRL of Italy for the procurement and integration of 48 heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian Navy’s Kalvari-class submarines. The torpedoes are expected to substantially upgrade the strike capabilities of the Navy’s six Kalvari-class submarines.

According to the ministry, delivery of the torpedoes will begin in April 2028 and is scheduled to be completed by early 2030. These advanced torpedoes are equipped with modern technological features and enhanced operational capabilities.
