New Delhi, 26th Nov: India on Wednesday issued a sharp rebuke to Pakistan after Islamabad criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for hoisting a saffron flag at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, calling Pakistan a country with a “deeply stained record of bigotry” and “systemic mistreatment of minorities.”
Responding to media queries, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have seen the reported remarks and reject them with the contempt they deserve. As a country with a deeply stained record of bigotry, repression, and systemic mistreatment of its minorities, Pakistan has no moral standing to lecture others. Rather than delivering hypocritical homilies, Pakistan would do better to turn its gaze inwards and focus on its own abysmal human rights record.”
Pakistan had objected to the raising of the saffron flag, terming it an attempt to impose pressure on minorities in India and erase Muslim heritage. The reference was to the Ram Temple built at the site where the 16th-century Babri Masjid once stood. The mosque was demolished on December 6, 1992, by a right-wing mob — a flashpoint that triggered nationwide unrest.
The Supreme Court, in a landmark 2019 judgment, resolved the decades-long dispute by handing over the site to Hindu petitioners. A year later, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the Ram Temple. In January 2024, he presided over its consecration.
On Tuesday, the Prime Minister hoisted a 22-foot saffron flag at the temple and led rituals conducted by 108 priests under the guidance of scholar Ganeshwar Shastri. Addressing the gathering, he described the moment as the fulfilment of a “500-year-old resolve.”
The triangular flag bears the symbol of the Sun, signifying eternal energy, radiance, virtue and enlightenment — attributes associated with Lord Ram.
