New Delhi, 10th Dec: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today welcomed UNESCO’s decision to inscribe Deepavali on the Intangible Cultural Heritage List, describing the festival as the “soul of our civilisation” and a timeless symbol of illumination and righteousness.

Responding to a post by UNESCO on X announcing the inscription, the Prime Minister said people across India and around the world were “thrilled” by the global recognition of one of the country’s most cherished traditions.

“For us, Deepavali is very closely linked to our culture and ethos. It is the soul of our civilisation. It personifies illumination and righteousness. The addition of Deepavali to the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List will contribute to the festival’s global popularity even further,” PM Modi wrote.

He added, “May the ideals of Prabhu Shri Ram keep guiding us for eternity,” tagging UNESCO in his message.

The festival, celebrated across India and among the global diaspora, has now gained a new platform for international recognition and preservation following its inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
