Panaji, 19th Dec: Curlie’s, one of North Goa’s most popular beachside pubs, was sealed on Friday by the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) authorities following regulatory action in the wake of a recent fire incident at Birch by Romeo Lane.
The sealing comes after the Goa administration ordered a comprehensive inspection of nightlife establishments across the state to verify compliance with licensing conditions, fire safety norms and environmental regulations. The inspection drive was launched amid heightened scrutiny of safety standards in beachside pubs and shacks.
CRZ officials said the review focused on adherence to coastal regulations, fire safety measures and statutory licences mandated under CRZ norms. During the inspection, authorities detected serious violations at Curlie’s, prompting immediate enforcement action.
Curlie’s has long been a prominent nightlife destination in North Goa and is frequented by domestic and international tourists. A portion of the establishment had earlier been demolished in connection with the high-profile 2022 case involving the death of BJP leader Sonali Phogat. Despite the earlier action and repeated warnings, officials said the pub continued to flout regulatory norms.
“The establishment failed to comply with CRZ regulations and other statutory requirements despite earlier action. This left the administration with no option but to seal the premises,” a senior official associated with the inspection said.
The move is part of a broader enforcement campaign aimed at curbing illegal constructions and unauthorised operations along Goa’s fragile coastline. The state administration has warned that inspections will continue and similar action will be taken against any establishment found violating CRZ, safety or licensing norms.
