New Delhi, 11th Sept: Vice President-elect Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan will be sworn in on Friday morning, September 12, at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office.
A top NDA source said the ceremony timing was chosen based on auspicious guidance from a pandit. Invitations will be sent to senior NDA leaders.
Radhakrishnan, the NDA nominee, was elected as India’s 15th Vice President on Tuesday with 452 votes, defeating Opposition candidate and former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, who secured 300 votes. Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody announced that 767 of 781 MPs cast their votes, with 752 valid and 15 invalid ballots, recording a 98.2% turnout.
While the NDA had 427 MPs backing Radhakrishnan on paper, 11 YSRCP lawmakers also supported him. The NDA candidate received 14 votes more than expected, triggering speculation of cross-voting by the Opposition. Thirteen MPs abstained, including seven from BJD, four from BRS, one from SAD, and one Independent.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Radhakrishnan on X, highlighting his lifelong dedication to serving society and empowering the marginalised. Modi expressed confidence that Radhakrishnan would strengthen constitutional values and parliamentary discourse.
