New Delhi, 10th Feb: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sharply criticised the ongoing legal battle within the Kapur family over the estimated ₹30,000 crore fortune left behind by businessman Sunjay Kapur, describing the public dispute as a “very sorry state of affairs”.
The court was hearing a civil suit filed by Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, who has alleged that her daughter-in-law Priya Kapur used a fraudulent trust to divert family assets. Expressing displeasure at the nature of the allegations, the court remarked that the family was “washing dirty linen in public” and urged all sides to consider mediation.
“God blessed the family with significant wealth that should be enjoyed by everyone,” the court observed, while suggesting that the parties resolve the dispute amicably. It advised Rani Kapur, Priya Kapur, and other family members—including Sunjay Kapur’s second wife, actor Karisma Kapoor, and their children Kiaan and Samaira—to explore mediation.
The case centres on the RK Family Trust, allegedly created in October 2017. Rani Kapur has sought a declaration that the trust is “illegal, void, and the result of fraud, forgery, and undue influence”. She has also requested dissolution of the trust, a full accounting of its assets, and restitution.
In her plea, Rani Kapur claimed that a “complex web of illegal transactions” carried out in collusion with her son resulted in her assets being transferred to the trust without her knowledge. She further alleged that the fraud was discovered only after Sunjay Kapur’s death, which she described as occurring under “mysterious circumstances”.
Sunjay Kapur, 53, died in London on June 12 last year while playing polo. The official cause of death was recorded as cardiac arrest, though reports suggested he may have suffered an anaphylactic shock after a bee flew into his mouth.
According to the suit, Rani Kapur is the sole beneficiary of the estate of her late husband Surinder Kapur, founder of the Sona Group, who died in 2015. His will was probated in January 2016 without objection from Sunjay Kapur.
However, the suit alleges that after Rani Kapur suffered a stroke in September 2017, she became dependent on her son and Priya Kapur, who allegedly used the situation to transfer her assets into the trust without her consent.
The High Court has indicated that mediation may help resolve the dispute and avoid further escalation of the family conflict.
