Mumbai, 13th Nov. A special court in Mumbai on Wednesday issued a fresh bailable warrant against former BJP MP Pragya Thakur, a prime accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, after she failed to appear before the court, citing health issues. This is the second such warrant issued against Thakur in November.
On November 5, the court had issued a similar warrant when Thakur failed to attend the proceedings. The court had directed her to appear on November 13, but on Wednesday, her lawyer J.P. Mishra informed the court that Thakur was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bhopal. He submitted the medical records as proof of her condition.
In response, the judge issued a fresh bailable warrant of Rs 10,000 and directed Thakur to appear before the court on December 2. The court also emphasized that the trial, which is nearing its conclusion, requires the presence of all accused for daily hearings.
The 2008 Malegaon blast, which took place on September 29, 2008, killed six people and injured over 100 others when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle exploded near a mosque in Malegaon, a town in north Maharashtra, about 200 km from Mumbai. Thakur, along with Lt Col Prasad Purohit and five others, is on trial for their alleged involvement in the blast conspiracy.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the involvement of high-profile political figures and the allegations of Hindu nationalist links to the blast. The trial has been ongoing for years, with several delays and absences by the accused.
