New Delhi: The Congress on Friday announced that it will “very soon” challenge the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the Supreme Court. The announcement comes a day after Parliament passed the contentious legislation following a marathon debate in both Houses.
AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh confirmed the move on X, stating, “The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. We are confident and will continue to resist all assaults of the Modi Govt on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India.”
The Rajya Sabha passed the Bill in the early hours of Friday after a 13-hour debate, with 128 members voting in favor and 95 opposing it. The Lok Sabha had cleared the Bill a day earlier with 288 votes in support and 232 against.
Opposition parties strongly opposed the legislation, calling it “anti-Muslim” and “unconstitutional.” However, the government defended the Bill, calling it a “historic reform” aimed at benefiting the minority community.
Ramesh also noted that the Congress has challenged several key laws in the Supreme Court, including the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, amendments to the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, and changes to the Conduct of Election Rules, 2024. The party has also intervened in legal proceedings concerning the Places of Worship Act, 1991.
With the Waqf Amendment Bill now set for legal scrutiny, the Supreme Court’s response will be crucial in shaping the future of the legislation.
