Bhopal, 9th March.
In a major blow to the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, senior leader and former Union minister Suresh Pachouri, along with ex-MP Gajendra Singh Rajukhedi and several other prominent figures, including former MLAs, crossed over to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bhopal today.

The defection took place at the BJP’s state headquarters in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, state BJP president VD Sharma, and former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, signaling a major shift in the political landscape of the state.

Among those who joined the ruling BJP were former MLAs Sanjay Shukla, Arjun Paliya, and Vishal Patel, adding to the exodus from the Congress camp. Suresh Pachouri, a long-time associate of the Gandhi family, previously held key positions within the Congress party, serving as Union minister of state for defence and representing the party in the Rajya Sabha for four terms. He also held significant roles within the Madhya Pradesh unit of the Congress, including state unit president and Youth Congress president.

Gajendra Singh Rajukhedi, a prominent tribal leader, had previously been elected as an MP from the Dhar (Scheduled Tribes) Lok Sabha seat on the Congress ticket for three terms. His decision to switch sides marks a notable shift in allegiance, given his earlier tenure as a BJP MLA before joining the Congress.

The defection of these senior leaders is expected to have repercussions on the electoral dynamics of Madhya Pradesh, potentially bolstering the BJP’s prospects in the upcoming polls.
