Congress Seeks Action on Death Threat to Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, 29th Sept: Congress general secretary K. C. Venugopal has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take immediate action against former ABVP leader Printu Mahadev for allegedly issuing a death threat to Rahul Gandhi during a Malayalam TV debate.

In a letter sent Sunday, Venugopal called Mahadev’s statement—“Rahul Gandhi will be shot in the chest”—a “cold, calculated and chilling death threat” to the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He said any delay in action would be seen as “complicity and the normalisation of violence” against a senior opposition figure.

Venugopal alleged Mahadev, a former ABVP state president and current BJP spokesperson, undermined constitutional principles by making the remark. He also flagged repeated security alerts from the CRPF regarding Rahul Gandhi’s safety, including one letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge that was mysteriously leaked to the media.

“This threat is symptomatic of a toxic atmosphere of hate that renders the LoP vulnerable to mindless violence,” Venugopal wrote, demanding “exemplary legal action” and warning that inaction would amount to a breach of the home minister’s oath.

Congress leaders accused the BJP of fostering a climate that encourages such threats. Party media head Pawan Khera called the incident “a conspiracy” and said leaking sensitive security details of a leader who lost both his grandmother and father to assassinations was “playing with fire.”

Kerala Opposition leader V. D. Satheesan also criticised the state government and police for not acting promptly against Mahadev. The BJP has not responded publicly to the allegations.
