Haridwar, 25th Dec: In a dramatic protest over prolonged power outages, Congress MLA Virendra Jaatii from Jhabreda in Haridwar district climbed electricity poles and snapped power supply to the official residences of three senior electricity department officers in Roorkee.
Jaatii, accompanied by his supporters, reached Roorkee on Tuesday carrying ladders and cutting tools. He first climbed an electric pole outside the Boat Club area and disconnected the power supply to the residence of Superintending Engineer Vivek Rajput. He later proceeded to the official homes of Chief Engineer Anupam Singh and Executive Engineer Vinod Pandey, cutting their electricity connections as well.
The MLA said his action was driven by public anger over unannounced power cuts lasting five to eight hours daily in Jhabreda and surrounding areas. “I have been raising this issue with the department for the past 10 days, but no action was taken. The public is suffering daily, and businesses are facing losses,” he said.
Jaatii claimed that while residents were forced to endure long outages every day, officials “were shaken after just one hour without electricity,” prompting him to stage the protest.
The electricity department has filed a formal complaint against the MLA at the Roorkee Civil Lines Police Station, alleging that the power lines were cut without a proper shutdown, posing the risk of a major accident.
The complaint further stated that the act violated departmental rules and amounted to direct interference in government work.
