Kannur, 27th Oct. Satheesan Pacheni, a senior Congress leader and former general secretary of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, died on Thursday at a private hospital in the district, according to party sources.
He was 54.
Pacheni had been fighting for his life for the past week after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage on October 16.
Though he ran unsuccessfully for the state Assembly five times and the Lok Sabha once, his aggressive campaign against CPI(M) stalwart and former Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan in Malampuzha in 2001 made him popular in mainstream politics.
During the election, he managed to reduce Achuthanandan’s winning margin in the Left bastion to just 4703 votes.
In the 2006 Assembly elections, the Congress leader tried again but failed to defeat the Left leader.
Satheesan Pacheni began his political career as a volunteer for the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU), the Congress’ student organization, and rose through the ranks to become its general secretary and state president.
From 2016 to 2021, he was also the president of Kannur’s District Congress Committee (DCC).
Several politicians, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Assembly Speaker A N Shamseer, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly V D Satheesan, and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, expressed their condolences on Pacheni’s death.
