JANJGIR-CHAMPA (Chhattisgarh), 22nd Dec: Launching a sharp attack on the Congress, BJP president JP Nadda on Monday alleged that “people from within the Congress” were involved in facilitating the 2013 Jhiram Ghati Maoist attack that killed several senior party leaders.

Addressing the ‘Janadesh Parab’ event at Khokhra Police Ground to mark two years of the Bharatiya Janata Party government led by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Nadda said previous Congress governments had maintained an “understanding” with Maoists, while the double-engine government under Narendra Modi confronted Left-wing extremism head-on.

Recalling the May 25, 2013 attack during the Congress ‘Parivartan Rally’ in Bastar’s Jhiram valley, Nadda said he closely followed developments as BJP in-charge for Chhattisgarh at the time.
“I say this with responsibility — information about the Jhiram Valley incident came from within their own ranks. Their own people were in contact with Naxalites,” he alleged.

The Maoist ambush had killed 32 people, including then state Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel, former leader of opposition Mahendra Karma and former Union minister Vidyacharan Shukla.

Nadda claimed Maoism has now been pushed into a limited number of villages and districts. “In the last two years, nearly 2,500 Naxalites have surrendered, 1,853 have been arrested and top leaders have been neutralised,” he said, adding that Maoism would be “uprooted completely” in the coming period.

Targeting the previous Congress government led by Bhupesh Baghel, the BJP chief alleged corruption, appeasement politics and failure on governance fronts, asserting that voters rejected such politics in the 2023 Assembly elections.

Highlighting the Vishnu Deo Sai government’s performance, Nadda cited major farmer assistance, welfare transfers, landless labour support, recruitment reforms and women-centric schemes as evidence of “result-oriented governance”.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, addressing the gathering, said a coordinated strategy focusing on security, rehabilitation and development had significantly weakened Maoist networks and was paving the way for lasting peace and prosperity in affected regions.
