New Delhi, 21st Sept: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Dr. Nishikant Dubey has alleged that the Congress party helped Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson escape India after the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster, which claimed over 22,000 lives and left more than 10 lakh people ill.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dubey claimed that the then Congress government, led by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, “protected” Anderson out of “greed for family, position, money and power.” He further alleged that in return, Rajiv Gandhi sought the release of his friend Adil Shahryar, who was serving a 35-year sentence in a US prison on charges of bomb-making and drug trafficking.

Dubey said Shahryar was freed during Gandhi’s 1985 visit to the United States after a pardon from President Ronald Reagan. He added that despite repeated court orders, no action was taken by the Congress government to bring Anderson back to face trial in India.
“The Lok Sabha reply from your own government in 2010 stands as proof,” Dubey wrote, tagging Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the official Congress handle.
The Bhopal gas tragedy remains one of the world’s worst industrial disasters. Warren Anderson, then CEO of Union Carbide, never stood trial in India and died in the US in 2014.
