Gogamukh/Behali, 1st April: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress during his first election rally in poll-bound Assam, calling the party “dangerous” for the state and accusing it of attempting to introduce a “communal violence law” ahead of the 2014 general elections.

Addressing a rally in Gogamukh in Dhemaji district, Modi alleged that the proposed law was aimed at appeasing a “fixed vote bank” and unfairly targeted the majority community. He claimed the BJP-led NDA had blocked the bill at the time and warned that similar proposals were now being revived.

“The Congress will do anything to gain power,” he said, accusing the party of pursuing divisive politics.

With Assembly polls scheduled for April 9, the Prime Minister asserted that the BJP is aiming for a third consecutive term in Assam, linking the election to the broader vision of a “Viksit Bharat” through a “Viksit Assam”.

Highlighting development initiatives, Modi said that while the Congress built only three bridges over the Brahmaputra in decades, the BJP government has constructed five in the past ten years. He added that the number of medical colleges in the state has risen from six to 14, with more under development.

He also announced upcoming infrastructure projects, including an underwater road and railway tunnel under the Brahmaputra, and cited efforts to address floods, erosion, and boost the petrochemical sector.

At another rally in Behali, Modi emphasised women’s empowerment, pointing to initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, dignity, and rights, including the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the state.

The Congress, however, hit back at the BJP, accusing it of failing to deliver on promises and raising concerns over rising prices. Party leader Pawan Khera criticised the government for increasing the price of commercial LPG during the election period and alleged that voters were dissatisfied with its performance.

As campaigning intensifies, Assam is set for a high-stakes electoral contest, with both the BJP and Congress sharpening their political narratives ahead of polling day.
