Congress-AAP Unity Was Needed in Delhi Elections: Amartya Sen

GG News Bureau
New Delhi, 12th Feb. Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has emphasized the “strong need” for unity between the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), stating that they should have fought the Delhi elections together with mutually agreed commitments.

In an interview with PTI at his ancestral home in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, Sen remarked that while the Delhi election results should not be exaggerated, they hold significance. He attributed AAP’s setback to a lack of opposition unity and the party’s failure to take a firm stand on secularism.

Sen pointed out that in several seats, BJP’s victory margin was smaller than the votes received by Congress, indicating that a united opposition could have altered the outcome. He also noted that AAP’s ambiguous stance on secularism and its perceived catering to Hindutva politics might have cost it politically.

Praising AAP’s governance in education and healthcare, Sen suggested that Congress should have aligned with the party on these issues. “My daughter, who lives in Delhi, appreciates AAP’s work in education and healthcare. Congress could have supported this and worked to expand such initiatives,” he said.

Regarding the potential impact of the Delhi elections on national politics, Sen warned that opposition parties must learn from AAP’s failure and present a clear vision. He specifically highlighted the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections, stressing the need for a strong stance against Hindutva politics.

On West Bengal’s political landscape, Sen expressed confidence that the state’s emphasis on secularism and social justice would prevent a “Delhi-type debacle.” He advocated for a united, inclusive India and a governance model focused on education, healthcare, and social justice.
