Bogota, 7th June: Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, a key opposition figure and potential presidential candidate for 2026, was shot during a campaign rally in the Fontibon district of Bogota on Saturday, according to national police sources. The 39-year-old senator, a member of the conservative Democratic Center party, was rushed to a hospital and is reported to be in serious condition.
Images circulating on social media showed the senator with a visible head wound, bleeding and being held by supporters at the rally venue. Uribe was reportedly shot in the back while addressing a public gathering in a local park.
Bogota Mayor Carlos Galan confirmed that Uribe is receiving emergency medical care and said the entire city’s hospital network is on alert for a possible transfer. A suspect has been arrested, and authorities are investigating whether more individuals were involved in the attack.
The Colombian government strongly condemned the shooting. President Gustavo Petro took to X (formerly Twitter) to express solidarity with Uribe’s family, writing, “I don’t know how to ease your pain. It is the pain of a mother lost, and of a wounded homeland.”
Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the hospital where Uribe is being treated and confirmed that an arrest had been made. “Investigations are underway to determine the full scope of the attack and whether others may be involved,” he said.
Uribe, a prominent voice in the Democratic Center party founded by former President Alvaro Uribe, was seen as a likely contender for the 2026 presidential race. The party described the attack as “serious” but has yet to release detailed information on the senator’s current medical status.
The incident has sent shockwaves across Colombia’s political landscape, raising fresh concerns about security ahead of the 2026 elections.
