Guwahati, 11th Dec: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated the newly built Shaheed Memorial Complex at Boragaon in Guwahati, a state-funded tribute to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement.
Addressing the gathering, Sarma described 10 December as a “sacred day” for Assamese people, recalling that on this very day in 1979, Khargeswar Talukdar became the first martyr of the movement at Bhawanipur. “This day is a moment of pride for us. After 40 years, 860 martyrs have finally received official recognition,” he said.
Constructed at a cost of ₹170 crore, the memorial features a towering 225-foot structure, which the Chief Minister said brings to life the sacrifice of those who shaped Assam’s socio-political identity. “This grand memorial enlivens the valour of the martyrs who contributed to Assam’s national life,” he added.
Built with modern technology, the complex is designed to preserve and reinterpret the memories of the Assam Movement for future generations. Officials said the project will be among India’s six major memorial landmarks.
The facility includes a water fountain, an advanced auditorium, a meditation hall, a food court, and a dedicated cycling track, offering both a commemorative and community-oriented public space.
