Calls for fulfilled finance pledges and support for Global South at UN summit in Belem

Belem, 23rd Nov: India has welcomed the key decisions adopted at the UNFCCC CoP30 in Belém, Brazil, reaffirming its commitment to equity, climate justice and global solidarity. Delivering its High-level Statement at the Closing Plenary on 22 November 2025, India expressed strong support for the inclusive leadership of the Brazilian Presidency and the balanced approach reflected throughout the conference.

India appreciated the Presidency’s efforts in highlighting climate finance, stressing that developed nations must fulfil the commitments first articulated 33 years ago at the Rio Summit. The statement noted that progress on Article 9.1 offers hope that these long-standing obligations will finally be met.

Welcoming advancement under the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), India said the decision acknowledges the urgent adaptation needs of developing countries. It further hailed the establishment of the Just Transition Mechanism, calling it a milestone to operationalise equity and climate justice at global and national levels.

Raising concern over unilateral trade-restrictive climate measures, India said such actions undermine principles of equity and Common But Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC). These issues, it cautioned, can no longer be ignored.

India reiterated that those with the least responsibility for the climate crisis must not be burdened disproportionately with mitigation obligations. It underscored the need for stronger global support to vulnerable communities in the Global South facing mounting climate impacts.

The statement reaffirmed India’s steadfast commitment to a rules-based international order that respects national sovereignty while ensuring inclusivity and fairness in climate ambition. India also thanked Brazil and the global community for their leadership and cooperation throughout CoP30.

Calling for collective effort in the journey ahead, India said the road from Belém must lead to a future defined by fairness, solidarity and shared prosperity.
