Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna on Wednesday stressed the need for preemptive communication in court procedures, urging lawyers to file advance letters for case withdrawals instead of relying on oral submissions during hearings.

The CJI’s remarks came while hearing a transfer petition in a family dispute case. The counsel informed the bench that the parties had resolved their differences and wished to withdraw the petition. Granting the withdrawal, the CJI observed that prior notice would improve court efficiency.

“If you have any such requests, you can always give a letter to the Court Master, one or two days in advance. That will help us resolve the matter or avoid reading the files unnecessarily,” he stated.

This suggestion aligns with recent procedural reforms introduced by CJI Khanna to streamline operations in the Supreme Court. On November 12, he announced that oral submissions for urgent listings and hearings would no longer be entertained, advising lawyers to submit requests via email or written letters.

Speaking at a Constitution Day event organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Tuesday, the CJI reaffirmed his commitment to addressing challenges faced by members of the Bar and called for their cooperation in implementing positive changes.

The initiatives aim to enhance procedural efficiency and ensure smoother judicial operations in the apex court.
