Baramati, 30th Jan: The Maharashtra Crime Investigation Department (CID) has begun its probe into the plane crash in Baramati that killed Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four others, a senior official said on Friday.

The state police have issued formal orders transferring the accidental death case, registered at Baramati in Pune district, to the CID following the January 28 crash.

“The Pune Rural Police registered a case of accidental death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the same has now been transferred to the CID,” the official said.

A team of CID personnel has started its investigation and will collect all relevant documents from the Pune Rural Police. The team will also visit the crash site near the Baramati airstrip as part of the inquiry.

Officials said the CID probe will also examine the possibility of any sabotage to the aircraft before Ajit Pawar began his journey from Mumbai to Baramati.

In parallel, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which functions under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, has launched a formal technical investigation into the crash to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The twin probes by the CID and AAIB are expected to focus on operational, technical and security aspects surrounding the fatal crash that has sent shockwaves across Maharashtra’s political landscape.
