Chinese FM Wang Yi to visit India, Beijing seek to mend ties after Trump tariff threat

WASHINGTON – According to media reports on Wednesday Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is expected to take part in the Special Representative-level talks and meet National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, Ajit Doval.

India and China look to thaw bilateral ties amidst US President Donald Trump’s tariff threat, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is likely to visit India later this month.

India and China, whose ties have been strained since the 2020 border standoff, are now seeking to mend their bilateral relationship amid major global developments, inclduing US President Donald Trump’s imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on New Delhi and looming threat of similar measures on Beijing.

Both countries have resumed high-levels talks.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing. Jaishankar also met Chinese President Xi Jinping during the visit.

PM Narendra Modi is also expected to meet President Jinping during his upcoming China visit to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin later this month.

New Delhi has not confirmed Modi’s China visit, Beijing has welcomed the Indian PM for the SCO Summit.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, “China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit.”

He added, “We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness.”
