Mumbai, 2nd August. Chinese Consul General in Mumbai, Kong Xianhua, has expressed his country’s readiness to collaborate with India in fostering stronger people-to-people relations, citing historical cooperation during the Sino-Japanese War as a foundation for future ties.
On Thursday, Kong visited the Indian Coast Guard Headquarters (West) to extend his gratitude for the maritime security agency’s efforts in rescuing Chinese mariners over the past two years. During his visit, Kong met with Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, Commander of the Indian Coast Guard (West), and emphasized China’s commitment to bridging gaps between the two nations and enhancing mutual friendship.
“Our two peoples will walk together like brothers and sisters,” Kong stated, reflecting on the successful joint rescue mission on July 24, where the Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy evacuated a critically injured Chinese mariner amidst challenging weather conditions. Kong highlighted the Coast Guard’s swift response and professional medical care, which facilitated the mariner’s recovery and return to China.
Kong also recalled the support provided by Indian medical professionals, such as Dr. Kotnis from Solapur, who sacrificed his life to aid Chinese citizens during the 1930s. He underscored that these historical acts of kindness and current rescue missions play a significant role in strengthening the bond between China and India.
“The Indian Coast Guard has saved three Chinese mariners in our consular district alone over the past two years,” Kong noted. He praised the Coast Guard’s motto, “Vayam Rakshamah” (we protect), and its alignment with the shared philosophy of prioritizing human life and compassion, which resonates with both nations’ values.
In response, IG Sharma highlighted that the Indian Coast Guard has rescued 27 Chinese citizens in the past decade, reaffirming the strong and supportive relationship between the maritime agencies of the two countries.
