WASHINGTON – Chinese Foreign Minister on Sunday called for the promotion of multilateralism, strengthening multilateral mechanisms, and jointly safeguarding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
Wang Yi said that China remains committed to peaceful dialogue as the primary means of resolving international conflicts, strongly opposing the use of “war and sanctions”.
He made remarks just hours after US President Donald Trump urged NATO nations to impose 100 pc tariffs on countries that purchase oil from Russia, stated “War cannot solve problems, and sanctions only complicate them. China does not participate in wars or plot them.”
Wang said at a joint press conference with Slovenia Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon held in Ljubljana that “Our role is to promote peace and negotiations, as well as political solutions through dialogue”.
He also called for the promotion of multilateralism, strengthening multilateral mechanisms, and jointly safeguarding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
“In the current international situation, with its instability and constant conflicts, China and the European Union should cooperate instead of engaging in confrontation,” he said.
Trump issued an ultimatum to NATO allies in a letter, stated the US will use “major” sanctions on Russia only when they agree to do the same and stop buying oil from Russia.
“I am ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA,” he said in a post to social media.
He said, “As you know, NATO’S commitment to WIN has been far less than 100 pc, and the purchase of Russian Oil, by some, has been shocking! It greatly weakens your negotiating position, and bargaining power, over Russia. Anyway, I am ready to ‘go’ when you are. Just say when?”
