Beijing, 21st Aug: Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong on Thursday accused the United States of acting like a “bully” by weaponising tariffs and pledged Beijing’s support to New Delhi in resisting Washington’s trade pressure.

Speaking at an event organised by the Chintan Research Foundation (CRF), Xu said the US had long benefited from free trade but was now using tariffs as “bargaining chips.” “The US imposed tariffs of up to 50% on India, and has even threatened more. China firmly opposes it. In the face of such acts, silence only emboldens the bully. China will firmly stand with India to uphold the multilateral trading system,” he said.

The envoy underlined that India and China are “double engines of Asia’s economic growth” and must cooperate to safeguard regional and global stability. “India and China unity benefits the world at large. Both countries are partners, not rivals. We should manage differences through dialogue,” he added.

Xu also pitched for deeper economic engagement, assuring that “all Indian commodities are welcome” in the Chinese market. He highlighted India’s strengths in IT, software, and biomedicine, alongside China’s growth in electronics, infrastructure, and new energy, stressing that “if connected, the two major markets will produce an effect of one plus one bigger than two.”

The remarks come days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Delhi, and ahead of the Prime Minister’s expected visit to China later this year for the SCO leaders’ summit.
