Mumbai, 7th Jan: Congress leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday clarified his controversial remark suggesting that US President Donald Trump could “kidnap” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying his intent was to warn about the possible collapse of the United Nations-led global order.

Earlier in the day, Chavan had referred to the US operation in Venezuela and asked whether something similar could happen elsewhere, including India, triggering sharp reactions from the BJP. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla slammed the comment, calling it strongly condemnable and accusing the Congress of repeatedly making what he termed “anti-India” statements.

Responding to the criticism, Chavan told PTI that he was highlighting what he sees as US actions violating international law and the UN Charter. He cited recent US moves and statements regarding Venezuela, Colombia, Greenland and Panama, arguing that if the world fails to build consensus against such actions, the UN system could collapse just as the League of Nations once did.

“My only objective was to say that we should be worried,” Chavan said, asserting that he was not predicting anything specific about India. On his use of the word “kidnap,” he added that he did not mean it literally and that his broader point was that “any action can be taken” if global norms are undermined.

The controversy has triggered fresh political sparring between the BJP and the Congress, with both sides trading sharp remarks over the implications of Chavan’s statement.
