Srinagar, 1st July. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the importance of changing mindsets and exploring local resources for fostering startups in Jammu & Kashmir. Speaking at the valedictory session of the 2-day National StartUp Conference RASE 2024 held at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Sunday, Dr. Singh highlighted the need for a paradigm shift towards entrepreneurship in the region.
Dr. Singh praised the nationwide growth of the startup ecosystem, attributing its momentum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Start-up India Stand-up India’ initiative. Despite this progress, he noted that Jammu & Kashmir had lagged behind due to a historical reliance on government jobs, influencing the youth’s career aspirations.
Addressing the conference, Dr. Singh underscored the untapped potential in sectors like agriculture, citing the success of initiatives such as the Aroma Mission. He pointed out that the Purple Revolution, originating from towns like Bhaderwah and Gulmarg, has gained national recognition, with thousands now engaged in lavender farming, previously uncommon in the region.
Encouraging a shift from conventional employment, Dr. Singh highlighted opportunities in floriculture, handcrafts, and textiles, areas where Jammu & Kashmir holds significant advantage. He emphasized the integration of academia, research, and industry as pivotal for startup success, calling for collaborative efforts among institutions like CSIR, IITs, IIMs, and medical colleges in the state.
Looking ahead, Dr. Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting startups through policies that encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. He envisioned a future where Jammu & Kashmir becomes a hub of diverse startup activities, driving economic growth and employment opportunities across the region.
