New Delhi, 18th July. The Centre has convened an all-party meeting on Tuesday to discuss the Sri Lanka issue.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will preside over the meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said.

During an all-party meeting called by the government on Sunday, the DMK and AIADMK requested that India intervene in the island nation’s crisis.

The External Affairs Ministry has earlier said that India will continue to stand with the people of Sri Lanka as they seek to realize their aspirations for prosperity and progress through democratic means and values as well as established institutions and a Constitutional framework.

According to MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, India has expeditiously finalised and provided assistance and support of around 3.8 billion dollars to Sri Lanka this year.

On Wednesday, Sri Lanka will hold elections to choose a new president. The closing date for nominations is tomorrow. Ranil Wickremesinghe, the country’s acting president, and Sajith Premadasa, the head of the main opposition, are two of the four contenders that have entered the race to become Sri Lanka’s next President.
