Recently, Bihar Planning and Development Minister Bijendra Yadav has given a big statement regarding giving special status to Bihar. Minister Bijendra Yadav said on the special status that this demand has become obsolete, even the report of the committee has come. Still special status to Bihar has not been given. He said that we are in government but there is a limit to anything. Now we will not demand special status. Now special assistance will be demanded in all the areas of Bihar.
Let us tell you that according to the status of a state in terms of its geographical, social, economic and resources special status is given. The special status is not a constitutional provision. The Central Government at its discretion keeping in view the above circumstances grants special status to any state.
In 1969 three states were given special status by the central government. The National Development Council had identified these states on the basis of hills, difficult terrain, low population, tribal area, international border per capita income and low revenue. In 1969, Assam, Nagaland and Jammu and Kashmir were given special status. Later Arunachal, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Tripura, Himachal and Uttarakhand got special status.
