Indore, 19th Oct. Police have registered a case against Congress MLA Babu Jandel from Sheopur for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Lord Shiva that hurt Hindu religious sentiments. The First Information Report (FIR) was filed at Tukoganj police station late Friday night, based on a complaint by Anil Naidu, the convener of the Vishva Hindu Parishad’s legal cell for the Malwa Prant (Indore-Ujjain division).
The case has been registered under sections 299 and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertain to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Hansraj Singh confirmed that an FIR was previously filed against Jandel in Sheopur for similar allegations, and the newly registered case in Indore will be combined with that original FIR.
The complaint cited a purported video circulating on social media, where Jandel allegedly used abusive language regarding Lord Shiva, leading to widespread outrage among Hindus. Jandel, who identifies as a “Shiv bhakt” (devotee of Lord Shiva), claimed the video was edited and manipulated to damage his reputation.
After the filing of the complaint, VHP workers protested outside the Tukoganj police station, demanding action against Jandel. The protest was called off only after police officials agreed to register the case. The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding religious sentiments in the region, as communities continue to grapple with issues of respect and representation.
