The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari permission to visit Haldarpara in the restive Sandeshkhali area on Thursday. Additionally, the court stayed the imposition of Prohibitory Orders under Section 144 of the CrPC at Haldarpara.

Justice Kausik Chanda issued directives for Adhikari’s visit, stipulating that the conditions would be identical to those imposed during his previous visit to Sandeshkhali on February 20. During that visit, Adhikari was instructed to file an undertaking before the local police station, pledging not to engage in activities that could escalate the law and order situation in the locality.

Moreover, Justice Chanda stayed the imposition of Prohibitory Orders under Section 144 of the CrPC at Haldarpara under Jeliakhali village panchayat on February 26. The court criticized the sub-divisional magistrate for mechanically imposing the orders without proper justification.

Adhikari had previously visited the Sandeshkhali village panchayat area on February 20, following a court order. Subsequently, he petitioned the court again, seeking permission to visit Haldarpara.

However, the state’s advocate general, Kishore Dutta, opposed the request, citing Adhikari’s alleged violation of the undertaking furnished during his previous visit on February 20.

The court’s decision to grant permission for Adhikari’s visit to Haldarpara comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, underscoring the judicial efforts to balance individual rights with public order concerns in sensitive areas.
