New Delhi, 1st Oct: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses for 2025-26 to 2030-31, with a total investment of Rs 11,440 crore. The initiative aims to achieve self-sufficiency in pulses, enhance domestic production, and benefit around 2 crore farmers across the country.

The mission sets an ambitious target of 350 lakh tonnes of pulses production by 2030-31 and will ensure 100% procurement of Tur, Urad, and Masoor from participating farmers under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) of PM-AASHA for the next four years.

To achieve these goals, the mission will distribute 88 lakh free seed kits, promote the latest high-yielding and climate-resilient varieties, and expand cultivation to rice fallow areas and other diversifiable lands. The plan also includes establishing 1,000 processing units to reduce post-harvest losses, enhance value addition, and boost farmer incomes, with a maximum subsidy of Rs 25 lakh per unit.

The programme will adopt a cluster-based approach, strengthen seed systems, and integrate measures like soil health improvement, mechanization, balanced fertilizer use, and crop diversification. High-quality seeds—126 lakh quintals—will cover 370 lakh hectares, supported by ICAR, KVKs, and state departments for capacity building and training.

By 2030-31, the mission is expected to expand area under pulses to 310 lakh hectares, raise yields to 1130 kg/ha, and significantly reduce import dependency, saving foreign exchange while supporting environmental sustainability.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the Mission will not only improve farmers’ incomes but also strengthen India’s self-reliance in pulses, contributing to the vision of a resilient and prosperous agricultural sector.
