New Delhi, 7th Feb. The Budget session of Parliament has been extended by a day until February 10, as declared by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday. Initially scheduled to conclude on February 9, the session, which commenced on January 31, will now continue for an additional day.
The decision to extend the session’s duration comes amidst the government’s plan to present a ‘white paper’ comparing the state of the Indian economy before and after 2014, when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assumed power, defeating the Congress.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi had previously indicated on Tuesday about the government’s intention to present this document.
With key agenda items such as the Finance Bill, budget discussions, and demands for grants still pending, and the impending presentation of the white paper, sources emphasized the necessity of extending the session.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the ‘white paper’ to illustrate the economic condition of the country during the Congress-led UPA regime and the subsequent turnaround under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. The white paper will be tabled in both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.
Despite the customary practice of Parliament not convening on weekends, exceptions have been made in the past, with sessions occasionally held on Saturdays.
