Brasilia/New Delhi, 6th June: The parliaments of all ten BRICS nations have unequivocally condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir that claimed 26 lives, vowing to adopt a collective policy of zero tolerance against terrorism. The resolution was part of the joint declaration adopted at the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum held in Brasilia on June 4–5, 2025.
The Indian delegation, led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, played a key role in shaping the forum’s deliberations and final outcome. Participating BRICS nations included India, Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia.
During the conference, Birla presented India’s firm position on counter-terrorism and global peace, reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policy of “zero tolerance” and a “strong and befitting response” to terrorism. He called for curbing terror financing, boosting intelligence-sharing, preventing misuse of emerging technologies, and deepening cooperation in investigations and judicial processes.
The forum also addressed pressing global issues such as responsible AI usage, equitable trade, inter-parliamentary cooperation, and maintaining international peace and security. India’s balanced and progressive stance on these matters was widely acknowledged and reflected in the final declaration.
In a major development, India was unanimously chosen to chair the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in 2026. Birla formally accepted the chairmanship during the closing ceremony in Brasilia.
The Indian Parliamentary Delegation included Harivansh, Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha; Surendra Singh Nagar, MP, Rajya Sabha; Vijay Baghel, MP, Lok Sabha; Vivek Thakur, MP, Lok Sabha; Dr. Shabari Byreddy, MP, Lok Sabha; along with Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary General, Lok Sabha, P.C. Mody, Secretary General, Rajya Sabha, and senior officers of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
