New Delhi, 29th Nov: A grand book launch celebrating the valour and legacy of the legendary Ahom warrior Lachit Barphukan was held on Friday at the Vichar–Viniyam Auditorium of Keshav Kunj, New Delhi. The event was organised jointly by the Centre for Northeast Studies, Phone Foundation and Prabhat Prakashan.

The book titled “Lachit Borphukan: The Warrior Who Defeated Aurangzeb’s Army” presents an authoritative account of Barphukan’s life, his military brilliance and his historic role in protecting Assam and upholding India’s civilisational spirit.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita attended the ceremony as Chief Guest, while Prof. Dhananjay Singh, Member Secretary of ICSSR, graced the event as Special Guest. Professors, researchers, writers and intellectuals from various universities across Delhi–NCR participated in large numbers. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Valentina Brahma, Head of the Centre for Northeast Studies.

In his address, Pabitra Margherita said, “Lachit Barphukan’s dedication is the triumph of the nation’s soul. As a member of the Ahom community, this subject is a matter of deep pride for me. His courage is not just the history of Assam but the reaffirmation of India’s collective spirit. His victory was the victory of a nation that can never be subdued.”

Special Guest Prof. Dhananjay Singh observed that Barphukan symbolises eternal courage, duty and patriotism. “His life teaches us that true strength lies not only in arms but in unwavering love for one’s motherland and culture. Assam is not merely a state; it is the eastern gateway of Indian civilisation, where devotion, culture and knowledge have flourished for centuries,” he said.

Author Dr. Raktim Patar, Associate Professor at JNU, noted that the Northeast has often been placed on the margins in mainstream historical narratives. This book, he said, challenges that perception and asserts the region’s central role in India’s history. The Hindi publication aims to take this glorious chapter to a wider readership across the country.

The presence of Shri Prabhat from Prabhat Prakashan added further significance to the event.

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Surendra Ghongkrokta, Chairperson of the Centre for Northeast Studies, expressing gratitude to all guests, participants and organisers.
