Chennai, 17th Oct: A major security alert gripped Chennai on Thursday evening after city police received an anonymous email claiming a bomb had been planted at Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan’s residence in Mylapore.
Police teams swiftly cordoned off the area and conducted detailed searches, but no explosives were found. Investigators later confirmed the threat was a hoax.
Sources said the email, sent to the city police, specifically mentioned the vice president’s Mylapore home, which has reportedly not been in use for some time. As a precaution, officials also searched his current residence at Poes Garden. After extensive sweeps by bomb disposal and dog squads, both locations were declared secure.
The scare follows a growing pattern of hoax bomb threats in Chennai targeting VIPs, schools, IT firms, and media houses, causing widespread disruptions.
Recently, actor-politician Vijay was targeted in two such incidents, prompting tighter security. In one case, a hotel employee was arrested for sending a fake threat.
Senior officials said efforts are underway to trace the source of these emails, often sent from fake or foreign accounts. “We are not taking any chances,” said an officer, adding that every alert triggers a full-scale response under security protocol.
