New Delhi, 6th Aug: A political conflict has erupted between the BJP and Congress after senior BJP leader Amit Malviya strongly criticized Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for her comments regarding a Supreme Court observation against her brother, Rahul Gandhi. Malviya accused the Gandhi family of “brazen defiance” and “contempt for the judiciary,” stating that they cannot be allowed to believe they are above the law.
In a post on X, Malviya said, “The smug entitlement of the Gandhi family is not just baffling – it reeks of contempt for the judiciary… This brazen defiance is a direct challenge to the authority of the Supreme Court and cannot go unchecked.” He called on the court to take suo motu cognisance of Priyanka’s remarks.
The controversy stems from a Supreme Court hearing on Monday, which stayed proceedings against Rahul Gandhi in a Lucknow court over his alleged derogatory remarks on the Indian Army during his 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra. While granting the stay, the court censured the Congress leader, stating, “If you are a true Indian, you won’t say such a thing.” The bench also questioned why Gandhi made such statements without any material evidence and why he did not raise them in Parliament.
In response, Priyanka Gandhi had defended her brother, telling reporters, “With due respect to the honourable judges of the Supreme Court, they do not decide who is a true Indian. It is the job of the opposition leader. It is his duty to ask questions and to challenge the government.”
The opposition INDIA bloc also weighed in, calling the court’s observations “unwarranted.” The Congress, in a statement, said it was the responsibility of political parties, especially the Leader of the Opposition, to comment on issues of national interest. The BJP, for its part, also took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi, with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressing hope that the Congress leader would “mend his ways” after being “rebuked” by the Supreme Court for making “unsubstantiated claims.”
