Chandigarh, 8th Oct. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has crossed the majority mark in the Haryana assembly elections, leading in 49 seats, while the Congress is ahead in 35 seats, according to the latest trends from the Election Commission.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda have maintained leads in their respective constituencies. Saini, contesting from Ladwa in Kurukshetra, is ahead by 3,070 votes over his Congress rival, Mewa Singh. Hooda, seeking re-election from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi, leads by 22,182 votes against BJP’s Manju Hooda.
However, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Singh Chautala and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) leader Dushyant Chautala are trailing in their seats. Notably, Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat is behind in the Julana seat in Jind district, where BJP’s Yogesh Kumar leads by 3,641 votes.
The counting began at 8 am, with early trends indicating a close contest between the BJP and Congress. By 10:55 am, the BJP had solidified its lead with 49 seats, while Independents were ahead in four, and INLD and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) were leading in one seat each. The Aam Aadmi Party has yet to secure any seats.
Among other notable trends, INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala is trailing Congress’ Bharat Singh Beniwal by 4,999 votes, although his son, Arjun Chautala, is leading from the Rania seat. Meanwhile, Savitri Jindal, the mother of BJP MP Naveen Jindal, is leading from Hisar.
While the BJP aims for a third consecutive term, the Congress seeks a comeback after a decade. The October 5 elections saw a voter turnout of 67.90%, with three-tier security arrangements in place at counting venues.
As counting progresses, both parties remain confident in their prospects, setting the stage for a significant political outcome in Haryana.
