In a significant development for Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, several notable leaders including 15 former MLAs and an ex-MP, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. This comes as the saffron party aims to bolster its influence in the southern state ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Most of the newly-inducted leaders hail from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), a former ally of the BJP in the state. The joining ceremony took place in the presence of Union ministers Rajeev Chandrasekhar and L. Murugan, along with the state BJP president K. Annamalai.

In his welcoming address, Annamalai emphasized that these leaders bring invaluable experience to the BJP and are determined to strengthen Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership as he gears up for a third consecutive term in power.

He also hinted at discontent with the current political landscape in Tamil Nadu, taking a swipe at the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its main rival, the AIADMK.

Asserting that Tamil Nadu is increasingly aligning with the BJP, Annamalai’s outspoken advocacy for his party’s ideological principles in the Dravidian-dominated state has garnered both praise and criticism.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar highlighted the significance of the mass joining, attributing it to Prime Minister Modi’s popularity even in states where the BJP has traditionally had limited influence.

Chandrasekhar expressed confidence in the BJP’s electoral prospects, citing PM Modi’s ambitious projection of winning 370 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) surpassing 400 seats. He said that Tamil Nadu could contribute significantly to this goal.

Chandrasekhar underscored the widespread desire among Indian citizens for the continuation of the transformative changes initiated over the past decade, signaling optimism for the BJP’s future endeavors in Tamil Nadu.
