New Delhi, 30th July: Samajwadi Party MP and veteran actor Jaya Bachchan today faced sharp condemnation from the BJP after she questioned the naming of “Operation Sindoor” during a Rajya Sabha debate, linking it to the tragic loss of life in the Pahalgam terror attack. The ruling party accused her of insensitivity and undermining the morale of the armed forces.
During her speech, Bachchan expressed condolences for the 26 victims of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack but then challenged the treasury benches on the choice of the operation’s name. “Why did you name it ‘Sindoor’? Sindoor toh ujad gaya (sindoor was destroyed), the wives of those who were killed,” she stated, sparking immediate protests from ruling party MPs. She also pointedly questioned the government’s intelligence failure that led to the attack, asserting, “You have destroyed the faith of the people.”
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla vehemently countered Bachchan’s remarks, stating, “Just see their mindset. Jaya Bachchan ji, the terrorists destroyed sindoor, but sindoor is not just for embellishment; it is also a symbol of strength and capability. The name Operation Sindoor was chosen to send a message: you wipe off sindoor, we will destroy you. This was achieved.” Poonawalla directly accused opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, of lowering the morale of the armed forces with such statements.
Reports indicate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally chose the name “Operation Sindoor” following the Pahalgam massacre, where Hindu men were brutally killed in front of their families. The name was chosen to reflect the profound loss symbolized by vermilion for married Hindu women and to signify a decisive retaliatory strike.
